21 Things to Do with Kids in the Harvey Region

It’s summer! That means sunny days spent relaxing on the beach, dinners overlooking the sunset and a dip in the ocean to cool off. It also means entertaining the kids over the school holidays.

Run out of ideas? We’ve got you covered. From outdoor adventures to the best road trip snacks, here’s our roundup of activities to keep kids (of all ages) happy these summer holidays.

1. Farm Animal Tours

Make some new furry friends at Harvey Farm Barn in Cookernup (just 10 minutes from Harvey)! Book a ticket for a self-guided tour around the farm, then settle in for a picnic on the grass and let the kids run around on the playground.

2. Wildflower Ridge Walk

This Harvey walking trail boasts stunning views and is short enough that even little legs can enjoy it. To the west, look coastward to spot the beach or catch a fiery summer sunset. On the eastern side of the walk, settle in for a post-trek snack and relaxing views of the Harvey Dam.

3. Ice Cream

Is it really summer holidays without ice cream? Grab a cone (or a milkshake) from Harvey Cheese in Wokalup. While the kids are busy with their frozen treats, adults will love exploring the range of local gourmet creations on offer in-store or sampling some of the artisanal cheese made on the premises.

4. Fishing, Crabbing & Prawning

With 42 kilometres of pristine coastline and an abundance of inland waterways, there’s no shortage of fishing spots in the Harvey Region. Some of our favourites are Binningup Beach, Harvey Dam and Collie River. Want to know the locals’ favourite summer hotspot? Leschenault Estuary is the place to be for crabbing and prawning. Wade out into the water and scoop up a fresh feed for dinner – there’s nothing like it!

5. Mini Golf

Located at Old Coast Road Brewery in Myalup, the Wonders of WA mini-golf course is fantastic fun for all ages! Take a tour of Wave Rock, Rottnest Island, the Pinnacles, and Mount Augustus and if you’re lucky score a hole-in-one! Each of the 18 holes features a different attraction giving you the opportunity to learn more about some of WA’s best features as you play your way through the course.

6. Bike Riding

There are plenty of great spots to jump on your bike and peddle your way around the Harvey Region. For a relaxing ride, suitable for all ages, we recommend the Eaton to Australind Historic Trail which will take you past Leschenault Estuary and via the Paperbarks Trail along Cathedral Avenue.

7. Playgrounds

There are almost too many playgrounds to count in the Harvey Region so here are our top 3 – Lucy Victoria Nature Playground, Karragarup Play Space at Ridley Place Foreshore in Australind, and Binningup Beach Foreshore Playground (featuring the Waabiny pirate ship).

8. Tree Hunting

If you’re up for a road trip, venture into the Harris River State Forest near Brunswick Junction to find Australia’s biggest Jarrah tree. Located on Big Tree Road, the Jarrah Hadfield (affectionately known as “Haddie”) is more than 10 metres in circumference and over 260 years old! This one’s hard to find so make sure you check the directions before heading out.

9. Hit the Beach

Remember those 42 kilometres of coast we mentioned? There are great beaches all the way along. Whether it’s surfing at Weedies in Binningup, sunbathing at Buffalo Beach or driving along Myalup Beach, you can’t go wrong with a day at the seaside.

10. Go Camping

11. Waterway Adventures

Between all the dams, rivers, lakes and beaches, this area is a water-lover’s paradise. Make sure to pack your paddle boards, kayaks and skis on your next visit. Lake Brockman, the Collie River and Harvey Dam are just a few of the top spots.

12. Pie Time

Is there anything more quintessentially Australian than a meat pie? Try some of the best at Miami Bakehouse in Myalup. The perfect stop-in for when that mid-road trip hunger strikes. Grab a pie, cake or coffee and explore the KangaArt Garden Gallery of elaborately decorated kangaroo statues.

13. Fish & Chips

Even the pickiest palates can’t resist a trip to the chippy. Get your fill of delicious local seafood and crunchy golden chips at the shops in Harvey, Brunswick or Treendale.

14. Farm Stays

Get the best of both worlds at one of the Region’s farm stays with accommodation and activities all in one! Imagine waking up in the morning and walking straight outside to feed some friendly farm animals, or watching wildlife flit past from your cosy cabin porch…sounds like a country dream.

15. Skate Parks

Raising the next X games champion? They can hone their skills at one of the skate parks in the Region.

16. Family BBQ

Summer afternoons are best spent at a family barbeque. Take your next barbie out of the backyard and enjoy dinner with a view at the Leschenault Waterways Eco Museum, Gibbs Pool or by the coast.

17. The Big Orange

A Harvey Region summer wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the iconic Big Orange in the heart of citrus country. Now housed on the grounds of Harvey River Estate, the 14-metre tower overlooking Harvey’s famous orange orchards is a family favourite.

18. Grab A Bite

Worked up an appetite yet? Treendale Farm Hotel in Australind (multi-time winner of AHA WA’s Best Family Dining Venue) and The Crooked Carrot in Myalup are the local go-tos for big feeds and even bigger play areas.

19. Kite Surfing

For the keen adventurers out there, kite-surfing could become a new favourite hobby. Leschenault Estuary is a hotspot for windchasers and you’ll often see their colourful sails dotting the sky.

20. Public Art

Follow the Harvey Region Art Trail to discover the public art in the Harvey Region. Full of history and culture, they tell the story of this place and its people – they also make great TikTok backdrops for those kids whose preferred canvas is a screen!

21. Youthchella

Get ready to party at the Shire of Harvey’s annual youth festival, Youthchella. Designed for ages 10 to 18, the iconic festival is a mix of fun activities, live music, and delicious food – the perfect way to celebrate the end of the summer holidays!
