History

Meriden Park Recreation Ground was named after the original farm that stood at this location.

In 1898, Major Henry Geoffrey Palmer and his wife Grace purchased the Fairlawn Farm and renamed it Meriden after Palmer’s birthplace in Warwickshire, England. Grace Palmer, nee Clifton, was the great-granddaughter of Marshall Waller Clifton, the founder of Australind.

They started a successful dairy farm at Meriden with 30 cows.

Meet Major Palmer

Major Henry Geoffrey Palmer was a pioneering leader of Harvey and also served in the Boer War, and the 10th Light Horse Regiment, and 12th Reinforcements during WWI.

While serving with the A.I.F. in World War I, the Sultan of Egypt awarded Captain Palmer the Order of the Nile.

It is believed that there are only four awards in Australia.
