The global wellness tourism industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with travelers increasingly seeking destinations that offer opportunities to enhance their well-being. Forecasted to double in size from 2022 to 2027, the sector is projected to reach US$1.4 trillion in expenditure, with an annual growth rate of 16.6%. For the Harvey Region, this presents a compelling opportunity to position itself as a premier wellness tourism destination, capitalising on its pristine natural landscapes and unique experiences to attract high-yield visitors.

In 2024, Australia’s South West (ASW) developed the Australia’s South West Wellness Tourism Strategy, a 10-year framework designed to drive sustainable growth in this sector. The strategy aims to harness the region’s natural assets—including its breathtaking coastlines, forests, and national parks (all of which exist in the Harvey Region) by promoting ‘Nature for Nurture’ experiences that align with global wellness travel trends.
The goal is clear: increase the appeal of the Harvey Region as a wellness destination. This will attract wellness travelers who tend to stay longer, spend more, and travel throughout the year, thereby boosting the local economy and fostering tourism resilience.
So, what constitutes a “Wellness Experience”?
A wellness experience, as defined in the ASW 2025 Wellness Campaign Prospectus, encompasses activities, products and services designed to enhance personal well-being through nature, culture, relaxation, and holistic health practices. These experiences can include spa treatments, meditation, yoga, forest bathing, nature-based retreats, Indigenous cultural immersions, and sustainable dining. The focus is on fostering physical, mental, and emotional rejuvenation while promoting eco-conscious and community-driven tourism in the Harvey Region.
The ASW Wellness Tourism Strategy provides a roadmap for transforming Australia’s South West and the Harvey Region into a world-class wellness tourism hub. By embracing this vision, the region can secure long-term economic benefits, support environmental conservation, and enhance the well-being of both residents and visitors.
