Australind & Leschenault History

We are High Hopes & Hardship

The Leschenault Estuary and surrounding rivers have been home to the Elaap clan group of the Noongar Wardandi tribe or Yoongan Jarli Elaap (People of Elaap) and the Cultaa Yoongan Jarli (Mullet people) for more than 45,000 years.

Established in the 1840s, Australind – Leschenault is also one of the State’s first settled communities.

Uncover colonial Western Australia heritage, from our connection with Indian for horse breeding, plans of a London’s style city, and one of the smallest and oldest churches in Australia on one of the area’s heritage trails:

  1. Australind Heritage Trail
  2. Leschenault Heritage Trail.

Australind was to be built on 1,000 acres with a cathedral, churches of every denomination, colleges, library, museum, post office, military barracks, hall and tavern, a pubic quay on the estuary, a Customers House, parks and gardens for recreation, and great squares such as adorned London and Paris, streets and boulevards, and 40,000 numbered buildings blocks to provide houses for the future population.
