Bunbury Golf Course 1948

Bunbury Golf Club (formerly the Clifton Park Golf Course) boasts a fully reticulated 18-hole golf course in the tranquil setting between the Collie River and the Leschenault Estuary.

Established in 1948 at Clifton Park, Australind, the Club’s policy has been one of continual improvement. The course is now considered among the top 10 in Western Australia and the top 100 in Australia.

It is a well-wooded course with undulating greens spanning over 180 acres. Polish your swing at their full 250-metre driving range, chipping bunker, and putting practice greens.

Club hire, motorised carts, and golf tuition are available. The On Course Golf Pro Shop sells golfing attire, hats, wet weather gear, shirts, and trousers, as well as a wide range of new golf balls and accessories.

Enjoy a meal on the deck as you look over the greens towards the beautiful Leschenault Estuary at the Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant.

History

With the end of World War 2, a group of energetic golf members, including Dr Albie Abbott and Fred J Flanagan, canvased the possibilities of purchasing land to develop a new golf course in the Australind area.

The area near Eastwell was suggested, as the gentlemen had ridden over it many times with the Bunbury Hunt Club.

By 1945, most of the Australind community area south to the present Eastwell Road, and between the rivers and the estuary, had been developed. There were two underdeveloped “super blocks” south of Eastwell Road. One was Location 23, and between it and Eastwell Road was Location 31. Two great great granddaughters of Marshall Waller Clifton, Cecile (1890- 1966) and Emily Emmie” Ker Clifton (1891- 1990), inherited Location 31. It had been purchased by Marshall Waller Clifton for his son Gervasse in 1856.

In about 1945, the granddaughters were approached to sell the southern portion of this land for a golf course.

At first, the sisters were averse to releasing the land. However, they finally agreed to sell on certain conditions: the portion fronting the main road was to be alienated for private sale, and the course was to be named Clifton Park.

The course was designed by Albie Gough, Joe Allen and Fred Flanagan.
