Yarloop CWA Rooms Historic Site

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) was formed in NSW in 1922 to improve conditions for women and children in rural and remote areas. Each state followed suit, with WA in 1924.

The Yarloop CWA Branch was formed at a special meeting convened by Mesdames Stubbs, Gillard and Dyer in the Yarloop Hall on Friday, 12 August 1938. The meeting day was set for the second Wednesday of each month at 2.30 pm and to be held at Gillard’s Hall.

Freehold land was purchased in 1944, which was unusual, as they often built CWAs on railway reserve land.

Syd Adams commenced work on the rooms in 1952, but the opening was delayed until 10 February 1954 because CWA Headquarters initially couldn’t find the deeds to the land!

This building was destroyed by the 2016 Bushfires.

A new building was constructed by TR Homes in Maddington and transported to Yarloop. It was opened on 12 August 2018 to coincide with the branch’s 80th birthday celebrations.

They found the CWA sign from the original building in the rubble in perfect condition and now takes pride of place on the verandah.
