Manufacturing the Future from the Harvey Region

When Bruce and Megan purchased the historic Wokalup Tavern in 2017, they saw an opportunity to restore a local landmark and create a destination that celebrated the Harvey Region.

Originally established in 1906, the Wokalup Tavern has long been part of the region’s history.

After several years living in Melbourne, Bruce and Megan returned to Western Australia with a vision to blend Melbourne’s vibrant food, beer and hospitality culture with the relaxed character of country WA. That vision became Brugan Brewing.

Constructed during 2020 and 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, the brewery, located behind the historic tavern, was built through resilience, adaptability, and a strong belief in the region’s future.

Today, along with excellence in beer manufacturing, Brugan Brewing has become one of the Harvey Region’s standout hospitality destinations, attracting locals and visitors travelling through the South West.

Adding to the achievement, Bruce continues to balance leading the South West’s largest irrigation scheme, Harvey Water, with overseeing the growth of Brugan Brewing.

Collaboration and Connection

At the heart of Brugan Brewing is a strong focus on local collaboration and regional produce.

The brewery uses locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, including Mallokup malts and hops sourced from the Margaret River region, helping create beers that reflect the flavour and identity of the South West.

The venue also serves wines from across the Geographe wine region, encouraging visitors to experience more of the leading local producers.

Creating a Manufacturing Experience

What makes Brugan Brewing unique is its blend of a restored heritage tavern and a modern microbrewery experience.

Visitors can enjoy one of 11 handcrafted beers brewed on-site while surrounded by the history and atmosphere of one of the region’s oldest hospitality venues.

The Mid IPA and Light Lager are favourites amongst the regulars. Brewer Ravi Singh is always trialling different boutique flavours to keep beer lovers on their toes.

The manufacturing and brewing facilities are located adjacent to the kitchen and dining area, providing a first-hand view of the brewing process.

Canning also occurs on-site through a mobile provider.

Homegrown Hero: Brugan Brewery

“We wanted to create something that felt genuinely connected to the region — a place where people could enjoy great local beer, quality food and the history and character of Wokalup all in one experience.” – Megan Hardwick, Director

Great Beer is Better with Great Food

The relaxed country setting, overlooking the rich pastures of Wokalup, and welcoming atmosphere have helped establish Brugan as both a community hub and a destination for those exploring the Harvey Region.

In addition to seasonal beverage options, visitors can experience a produce-driven menu from a team of chefs, creating an authentic regional food-and-beverage experience.

The results are evident: Brugan was a finalist at the Gold Plate Awards, and recently their beers took home two gold and two bronze prizes at the Perth Royal Food Awards.

Sustainability in Practice

Sustainability is a key part of Brugan Brewing’s operations.

The business has invested in solar infrastructure to help reduce energy consumption.

By prioritising local sourcing, including bread from Dardanup Bakery, Brugan supports nearby agricultural producers while contributing to a more circular regional economy.

The business also reduces waste and landfill by supplying spent grain to Hall’s Family Dairy down the road. In return, Hall’s provides Brugan with their sensational cheese products for use in its kitchen.

Looking Ahead

Bruce and Megan remain focused on thoughtful, sustainable growth.

On Mother’s Day in 2026, Brugan served a whopping 642 meals across the day, renewing interest in earlier plans to expand the dining area by relocating the bottle shop.

There are also plans to renovate the facade of the original Wokalup Tavern building.

As the business continues to evolve, the focus remains on preserving Wokalup’s character while strengthening Brugan Brewing’s reputation as one of the Harvey Region’s must-visit hospitality destinations.
