Alexander Island

At European settlement, Alexander Island and the Collie River were named after Dr Alexander Collie, a Royal Naval Surgeon, who was sent in 1829 by Governor Stirling on a voyage of exploration to the South West.

The small 5.4-hectare island forms part of the Kalgulup Regional Park and provides a refuge for local and migratory waterbirds.

For conversation reasons, it is not open to the public. However, it can be viewed by boat or from a lookout point within the Clifton Community Reserve.

History

The island was part of a 120-hectare land grant to George Leake of Greenwood Farm in 1839.  Because it was located in the middle of the river, it was left in a relatively undisturbed state.

In 2005, it was recognised as an essential wildlife habitat and purchased by the State Government for $110,000.
