History – Gillards

In 1926, Victor Hummerston relocated his billiard table license to new wood and iron premises at this site.

Florence and Victor Hummerston sold to Sarah and Leslie Gillard in 1929 and Mrs Gillard’s shop was born. It operated as a combined ice cream and cool drink shop, tea rooms, a private hall, and a billiard saloon.

The hall attached to the complex was large enough to hold small dances and private functions. The billiard saloon was well patronised each evening and Saturday afternoon.

The shop burnt down in February 1960 when Jean and Ken Higgins owned it. They rebuilt and reopened two years later. The shop contained a drapery, newsagency, and a general store that sold homemade pastry goods.

When Eileen and Kevin MacDonald owned the general store in the 1980s, they also operated a TAB on the premises. In later years, it became the One Stop Shop and survived the 2016 Bushfires.

With the closure of the original general store further south on Station Street, it was renamed the Yarloop General Store.
