Brunswick Recreation Ground 1930s

The Brunswick Recreation Ground have been a central gathering place for community life since the early 1930s.

The area was cleared for public use around this time, and in 1931, the Brunswick Show Committee was formed. One year later, in 1932, the first Brunswick Agricultural Show was held on the grounds — a tradition that continues today.

In 1949, the Harvey Road Board resumed additional land from local landowner Mr Heppingstone to allow the grounds to expand and meet growing community needs. Since then, the site has supported sport, agriculture, and public events and has undergone significant upgrades, including the addition of a recreation centre and a cattle-selling complex.

A mural on the recreation ground gates honours the individuals and organisations who have helped shape the facility into a valued community asset.

Agriculture & the Brunswick Agricultural Show

Farming in the area has taken place since the early 1840s, following the establishment of the settlement of Australind. Brunswick Junction later developed as an important agricultural centre due to its fertile soils, reliable water sources and access to transport routes linking farms to regional markets. Early settlement focused on mixed farming, with dairy, cropping and livestock forming the backbone of the local economy. Large rural estates such as Melville Park and Alverstoke played a significant role in establishing agricultural practices in the district.

These strong agricultural foundations led to the establishment of the Brunswick Agricultural Show in 1932. The show provided farmers with an opportunity to exhibit livestock, crops and produce, while also serving as an important social event. While the show has evolved alongside changes in farming practices, it continues to celebrate the people, skills and produce that define Brunswick Junction’s rural identity.

Sporting History

Sport has long been central to the life of the Brunswick Recreation Ground, with football at its heart. From the early 20th century through to the 1950s, teams from Brunswick, Yarloop, Harvey and Mornington competed in a strong regional competition, fostering local pride and connection.

In 1956, teams from Brunswick, Harvey, and Wokalup/Benger united to form the Harvey—Brunswick Football Club, which joined the South West Football League. The Recreation Grounds became the club’s home base and a focal point for match days and social gatherings. Today, the grounds continue to support local sport, maintaining a proud tradition of teamwork, competition and community connection.
